Srebarna Nature Reserve has been a protected area since the 1940’s. In 1975 it came under the Ramsar convention. It was declared a World Birding Biosphere Reserve in 1977. UNESCO granted the status of World Heritage Site in 1985. Srebarna is also an I.B.A.

Hundreds of species of Animals, Birds and Plants make Srebarna their home and thanks to the network of walking and cycling tracks you can access most areas to experience them. A series of lookout posts and observation towers are ideal places to watch the wildlife or take a break and have a picnic or BBQ.

We boast the only breeding colonies of two important species in Bulgaria, The Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus) and Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus). You can also see White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and many other birds.
