Kovilj Wetland (Koviljski rit) is a large floodplain at the left bank of the Danube, near the namesake village. It is a complex of alluvial forests of ash, willow and poplar, as well as the hybrid black poplar plantations.

In this nature reserve about 190 bird species were recorded, including Ferruginous Duck, Black and White Storks, Pygmy Cormorant, Purple Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron and Eurasian Spoonbill, Eurasian Honey-buzzard, White-tailed Eagle, Little Crake, Common Snipe (also Great Snipe), Whiskered Tern, Eurasian Hoopoe, Middle Spotted and Syrian Woodpeckers, Savi’s Warbler, etc.

Getting there: This area lies conveniently close to the Beograd – Novi Sad motorway. Use the Kovilj exit, follow the main street through the village and continue straight onto a dyke.

When to go: breeding and migration seasons. From late April, carry an insect repellent with you.
